Dr. Liebenson receives Distinguished Service Award
Fourteen members of the Southern California University of Health Sciences/Los Angeles College of Chiropractic alumni were honored by the Alumni Association with lifetime achievement or distinguished service awards. The awards were presented during a luncheon attended by the university's Board of Regents.
Those receiving lifetime achievement recognition included: Dr. Alan Adams (Tallahassee, FL), Dr. Thomas Anderson (Los Angeles, CA), Dr. Charles Cline (Azusa, CA), Dr. E. Maylon Drake (Knoxville, TN), Dr. Delwyn Fitches (Bellflower, CA), Dr. Joseph Howe (Chesterfield, MI), Dr. Roy Logan (Garden Grove, CA), W. M. Marcussen (Arcadia, CA), Dr. Norman Marback (Culver City, CA) and Dr. John Thie (Pasadena, CA).
In presenting the awards, which included plaques that will hang in the university's Hall of Honor, SCU president Dr. Reed B. Phillips noted. These individuals have distinguished themselves among their peers for continued accomplishments in chiropractic research, education, philanthropy, service to the profession and humanity. These are the people we hold up to our students as examples of what they can become when professional quality blends with personal dedication and is accented by a never-ending desire for quality patient care that drives you to do your best at all times.
Phillips shared some of the deeds performed by those recognized by SCU including the appointment as dean of the new College of Chiropractic at Florida State University (Adams); member of the National Advisory Council for the Boy Scouts of America (Anderson); past president of the California Chiropractic Association (Cline); former president of LACC (Drake); past president of the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists (Fitches); founder of the American College of Chiropractic Radiology (Howe); former chief academic officer of the Anglo-European Chiropractic College (Logan); former vice president of the Atlantic Richfield Corporation (Marcussen); bringing chiropractic involvement to California public schools (Marback) and founder of the Touch for Health organization (Thie).
Receiving the Association's distinguished service plaques were: Dr. Arthur Croft (Spring Valley, CA), Dr. Martin Gallegos (Baldwin Park, CA), Dr. Craig Liebenson (Los Angeles, CA) and Dr. Stephen Smith (Buena Park, CA).
They were acknowledged for a variety of services to the industry, including research in whiplash (Croft); dedication to the public, including election to the California Assembly (Gallegos); lecturer and author on the subjects of rehabilitation and chronic pain (Liebenson); and consultant and trainer in the area of injury prevention (Smith).
Los Angeles College of Chiropractic is one of the senior chiropractic educational institutions in the United States, founded in 1911. Three years ago, the College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine was created to provide students with additional tools in the practice of alternative health care to their patients. Over 7,000 people have graduated from SCU and have established practices around the world.
